You probably won’t be using your boat during the winter months if you live in a colder climate!

Some people who live in colder northern climates, only use their boats approximately six months out of the year because it is simply too cold to go boating during the other half of the year. As a result, some insurance companies offer six month policies.

Boating is one of the most enjoyable activities that anyone can participate in. Many people have a desire to own one or more boats at some point in their lives. However, the question of boat insurance is something that should be thoroughly understood by anyone who has a desire to purchase a boat because like anything else, it is vitally important that a boat be adequately covered. In addition, there are some differences between boat insurance and other types of insurance. One of the major differences is that it is sometimes possible to buy a policy for only six months out of the year.

Many people who love boating, especially those who live in colder northern climates, only use their boats approximately six months out of the year because it is simply too cold to go boating during the other half of the year. As a result, these boats are typically used for six months and then taken out of the water and winterized in preparation for the next time that boat owners can use them. Therefore, boat owners who find themselves in this situation often want to purchase boat insurance for only six months instead of purchasing a policy for an entire year. Many companies do offer this option and depending on the boat in question, some boat owners can get insurance for far less money than they might initially think.

Many of the companies that offer boat insurance also offer owners the option to purchase six month policies. Some of the major insurance companies that provide homeowners insurance as well as car insurance also provide six month boat insurance policies. If you have insurance with State Farm or Allstate, or any of the other major insurance companies, you may want to check with your insurance agent regarding this question. Allstate in particular offers boat insurance starting at incredibly low rates that can be paid on a monthly basis. Many boat owners may be surprised to realize that in the right circumstances it may be possible for them to get insurance for less than $25.00 a month.

Keep in mind, although you may not be using your boat in the off months, you will still want some coverage for storm or winter damage, theft, etc.  Owning a boat provides an opportunity to have fun on the water and enjoy many pleasurable days. However, it is essential that the boat be adequately covered and therefore it is vitally important to find out the answers to any questions you may have by contacting your insurance agent.
